A History of Fabric Finishing: Unmasking the Chemical Truth

The journey of upholstery fabrics from simple, natural cloths to the chemically laden performance textiles of today is filled with innovation, yet the environmental cost has been high. However, with the recent multiple state banning of PFAS chemicals in upholstery fabrics, the tide is shifting.

In the early days, upholstery fabrics were pure, unadorned, and often highly susceptible to staining and wear. Seeking to improve longevity and aesthetic appeal, manufacturers started experimenting with various fabric finishes in the 18th century.

Fast forward to the 20th century, the quest for stain-resistant and durable upholstery led to the introduction of PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) chemicals in fabric finishes. Despite providing excellent stain resistance, their toxic nature became a subject of environmental concern.

In an attempt to address these concerns, many manufacturers are now phasing out PFAS chemicals, but without transparency about the alternatives they may be using. So it prompts a question, what finish are they using now?

Revolution Performance Fabrics has pioneered an entirely different approach. Instead of switching from one potentially harmful chemical finish to another, we believe that no finish is, in fact, the best finish. Our fabrics offer superior performance, matching the stain-resistant qualities of chemically treated counterparts, but without any hazardous chemical finishes.

Why do we believe 'No Finish is the Best Finish'? For us, it's about prioritizing both human and environmental health. By eliminating chemical finishes, we're cutting out potential toxins from your living spaces and reducing the pollution these chemicals can cause.

In the world of upholstery, the revolution has begun – and it's chemical-free.

PFAS Chemicals | What Are They and Why Are They Harmful?

PFAS chemicals (short for Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic compounds used on many everyday items and products that are hazardous to humans. These chemicals are used for a variety of purposes, but most commonly for their grease, water, and/or stain-resistant properties. Items treated with PFAS chemicals can range from kitchen utensils and outdoor furniture to carpets, clothing, and even cookware. Though these chemicals are convenient and have helped bring about a new age of material functionality, their hazardous makeup raises concerns for many human health and environmental issues.

How will I know if a product contains PFAS?

How will I know if a product contains PFAS?

If a product is labelled "stain-resistant" or "water-proof" it most likely contains PFAS Chemicals. When buying these products, first look for labelling that says PFAS-FREE. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer and ask them if their products contain PFAS or PFC Forever Chemicals. Revolution Fabrics recognized the harmful effects of these chemicals and eliminated using them in our manufacturing process over 20 years ago.
