With so many different fabrics to choose from, we figured we’d make things simple by introducing you to ten of the most widely used fabrics and going into detail regarding where they’re from, what they are, and what they’re used for.

Welcome to part 2 of this 10-part blog. Today, we’ll talk about everything you need to know about jute fabric.

What Is Jute Fabric?

Jute – although you might not realize it – is actually one of the most common fabrics around, only second to cotton! With that in mind, do you actually know where jute fabric comes from? As it turns out, jute fabric is a common fabric most often used for home goods and homewares.

Jute is the name of the plant that this fabric is derived from, but you might know it as “burlap.” Essentially, jute fabric is a tough, durable, and rough fabric that is most commonly found in products like carpets, window treatments, rugs, and even furniture covers. Likewise, “hessian” cloth, which is another, lighter form of jute fabric, is often used to make what you’d consider “burlap” bags and sacks.

As a natural fiber, jute is quite textured. If you’re familiar with a jute rope, jute furniture, or jute rugs, then you likely already know what to expect.
